Hochgolling

The Hochgolling (2,862 m) is a mountain of the Eastern Alps, located on the border of Steiermark and Salzburg, Austria, near the ski resort of Schladming. It is the highest peak of the Lower Tauern range. A hiking rather than a climbing peak, the mountain is relatively low by alpine standards, but still towers over all of its neighbours. Its northern face is a 1,200 m high wall, while its other slopes are more gentle. A long ridge slopes south from the summit, dividing the Göriach Valley from the Lessach Valley. Due to Hochgolling’s topographic isolation the views from its summit are panoramic, stretching from the glaciated peaks of the vast High Tauern in the west to...

Hochgall

The Hochgall is a mountain of the Rieserferner group in the High Tauern. the summit is in South Tyrol, Italy, just 500 m from the Austrian border. For the Austrian land survey of 1853-1854, Hermann van Acken and guides/helpers from the Defereggen valley climbed the mountain in the summer of 1854 from the East and over the NE ridge. Under “life-threatening conditions”, they placed a signal on the 3371/3354 m sub-peak where the summit ridge departs from the watershed (and the current Austrian-Italian border). The party reached the summit from Sankt Jakob in Defereggen in 10 hours. A few years later Paul Grohmann interviewed one of the guides, who told him that some of them...

Hochfrottspitze

The Hochfrottspitze is a 2,649-metre-high (8,691 ft) mountain, made of main dolomite, in the Allgäu Alps near Oberstdorf in Germany and the highest German mountain in the Allgäu Alps. The border with Austria runs along its ridge. Together with the Trettachspitze and Mädelegabel, the Hochfrottspitze forms the famous triumvirate of peaks on the main crest of the Allgäu Alps. The busy Heilbronn Way (Heilbronner Weg) runs past it to the south and east, about 100–150 metres below the summit. In spite of that, the summit is rarely climbed because the routes to it are challenging. Climbers leave the Heilbronn Way at the wind gap of the Bockkarscharte and ascend from the south following a faint path...

Hochfeiler (Gran Pilastro) is at the Austrian-Italian border, and the two sides of the mountain are very different. The Austrian side is completely under glacier. The normal south route from the Italian side is usually snow-free during the summer. So the south route starts from a parking at the road at around 1700 meters above the sea level, close to the village of San Giacomo. Hochfeiler can be climbed from the parking in one day. The time needed is 6...
